Other Inheritance Patterns Flashcards
Incomplete Dominance
when the alleles of a gene aren’t dominant nor recessive to another. the phenotype is a mix/fusion of the two distinctive phenotypes
Codominance
when the alleles of a gene both express themselves when they both show up in the genotype
Multiple alleles
a single gene controlled by three or more alleles
ex) blood types
Blood Types
one gene with multiple alleles code for blood types: I^A, I^B, and i. where I^A and I^B codominant
Polygenic Inheritance
a single characteristic controlled by 2 or more genes with 2 alleles each
ex) the more active alleles, the taller someone is
Sex-Linked traits
traits determined by genes on the sex chromosomes
Polygenic Traits can be identified by
a variety of phenotypes
Variability results in a what curve?
bell-shaped
Examples of polygenic traits
skin, hair, eye color, foot size, nose length, height, Rh blood factor
Characteristics/traits can be controlled by…
one gene w/ 2 alleles, one gene w/ multiple alleles, multiple genes each having 2 alleles, and sometimes environment
A polygenic trait involves what kind of alleles?
active and inactive
Sex-linked traits
traits controlled by genes that lie on a sex chromosome (X or Y)
What happens when a female has a sex-linked recessive trait and passes it down to offspring? What is the male offspring?
the male offspring inherits the trait
