Cell Regulation + Cancer Flashcards
Purpose of Checkpoints
to ensure that the cell is going through the cell cycle properly; they regulate the cell cycle
Regulators
proteins that control the rate of cell division; they respond to certain events and stimulate or inhibit cell division
Oncogenes
mutated genes of proto-oncogenes that code for proteins that stimulate
cell division
Tumor Suppresor Genes
genes that code for proteins that inhibit cell division
How does cancer happen?
genetic mutations or mutagens to the genes that control the rate of cell division
Why is cancer a problem?
invades healthy tissue; competes with normal cells (takes nutrients); diverts blood flow from normal cells; interrupts communication with other cells; blocks nerve connections; can enter bloodstream and spread
Treatments to cancer
surgical intervention, radiation, chemotherapy
Tumor
a mass cells
Benign Tumor
a tumor that doesn’t want to spread and doesn’t impact the body
Malignant Tumor
a tumor that spreads and affects the functions of the body
Metastasis
the area of which a tumor spreads beyond its original site
Radiation therapy to solve cancer
targeted beams of radiation to destroy dividing cells
Chemotherapy to solve cancer
drugs that interrupt cell division
ex) antimitotic drugs (stop spindle action)
Cancer
malignant tumor caused by uncontrolled cell division
What happens when dividing cells come in contact with one another?
cell division and cell growth stops
