Ecological Relationships Flashcards
What are the 3 types of ecological relationships?
Predator-prey (including herbivory), symbiosis, and competition
Predator-prey relationships
interactions between two unlike species - a predator and prey - which influence each other’s growth and affect eachother
Types of symbiosis
parasitism, mutualism, commensalism
Parasitism
one organism benefits and the other is harmed
ex) fleas on dogs
Mutualism
both organisms benefit in the relationship
ex) clownfish and anemone
Commensalism
one organism benefits and the other is not affected
ex) barnacles on whales
Types of competition
interspecific and intraspecific
Interspecific Competition
competition that can occur between members of DIFFERENT species
Intraspecific Competition
competition that can occur among members of the SAME species
Competition Exclusion Principle
principle that states that no two species can occupy exactly the same niche in exactly the same habitat at exactly the same time
