Enzymes Flashcards
Chemical Reactions
the process of turning reactants into products
Reactants
the compounds before the chemical reaction
Products
the compounds that are the result of a chemical reaction
What happens to chemical bonds during chemical reactions?
chemical bonds either are broken or created depending on what type of reaction it is
Activation Energy
the amount of energy needed for a chemical reaction to occur
Catalysts
things that speed up chemical reactions
Why are catalysts important?
they are important because they speed up and cause the chemical reaction to require less energy. without catalysts, the chemical reactions would occur to slowly to sustain life
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions within our bodies
What are substrates?
Substrates are the reactants to a chemical reaction with an enzyme
How do enzymes work?
Enzymes take in a substrate; substrate binds with the active site; active site holds substrate in place to speed chemical reaction; when chemical reaction is done the products are let go
How does pH affect an enzyme?
If an enzyme is not near its optimum pH, chemical reactions will slow and the enzyme will denature
How does temperature affect an enzyme?
If an enzyme is not near its optimum temperature, chemical reactions will be slow. When temperatures increase too much, the enzyme will denature
Denature
the process of altering an enzyme’s shape to cause it to not function anymore
What happens when a bond is broken during a chemical reaction?
Energy is released
What happens when a bond is made during a chemical reaction?
Energy is absorbed
