Cells Flashcards
Why are cells small?
Greater surface area to volume ratio. Makes transportation of materials in and out of the cell more efficient.
Why do cells divide?
asexual reproduction, growth of an organism, repair of an organism
chromatin
the form DNA is in during normal cell activity; not condensed
chromosomes
the form DNA is in during cell division; condensed
centromere
the structure that connects two sister chromatids
sister chromatids
identical chromosomes that are duplicated/replicated
Why is the cell’s surface area to volume ratio important?
The amount of surface area can affect the rate at which nutrients go in and waste goes out.
What must happen before cell division occurs?
DNA replication because without it each cell wouldn’t get a complete set of chromosomes
What is the purpose of centrioles?
to organize spindle fibers
