Yes, I see your point, (I understand what you are saying) everything makes sense, but I think that…» and then give your reasons.

A

Capisco quello che stai dicendo, ma penso che…»
«

34
Q

I don’t agree with you on this point

A

Non sono (proprio) d’accordo con te/con questo punto.»

If you say this, you are not saying that you totally disagree with the other person’s idea, but rather that you partially agree with what they have just said and that there is only a little piece of the discourse with which you disagree.

Indeed, using the adverb “proprio” is a great way to mitigate the tension of expressing contradictions and let the interlocutor down the guard.

Q

I suspect that the minister is starting to exercise political pressure to ease some of the unpopular provisions. Consequently the plan the government is working on to combat smoking could be partially compromised

A

Sospetto che il ministro cominci ad esercitare pressioni politiche per alleggerire alcune limitazioni considerate impopolari. Di conseguenza, il piano a cui sta lavorando il governo nella lotta al fumo potrebbe essere in parte compromesso.

42
Q

I read that somewhere. I don’t remember where

Q

please!, I beg you! mind you!

A

mi raccomando!

This is another lovely Italian expression which is somehow untranslatable. It is used as a mix between warning and advice but also to beg someone to be careful before something dangerous or important. Normally, whoever says it wants to show trust towards the other person but also alert them of the importance of what lies ahead. In this episode, Mark mentioned his Mum who was worried about him because he had to drive late at night and said:
Mi raccomando: stai attento per strada!
Please, be careful on the road!
Mi raccomando: guida con prudenza!
Please, drive safely!
It’s also possible to just say: mi raccomando! Usually the interlocutors are aware of the context and it’s intended what this exclamation refers to.

Non si fida del mio giudizio? Don’t you trust my judgment?
