night of long knives, hindenberg death, army oath, hitler power Flashcards
when was the night of the long knives
1934
what limitations did hitler have before the night of the long knives
-he did not have the majority in the reichstag
- he could only pass laws if Hindenberg passed article 48
- the SA were continually unpredictable and unorganised
- chancellors didnt usually last very long, if he didnt pass any laws, hindenberg would remove him
- he could easily lose support in the next election if it didnt look like he was solving germany’s problems
how did the oath of allegiance change after hindenbergs death
the old oath pledged allegiance to germany itself while the new oath pledges allegiance and obediance to Hitler
why is the new oath so significant in increasing hitlers power
because the new oath states that whatever happens, the people will follow, obey and support hitler meaning he will always have support, even if the people dont agree with him.
why did hitler decide to get the army to side with him instead of the SA
- people didnt like the SA as they saw them as violent street thugs that would fight in the streets
- Hitler didnt trust Rohm as he was beggining to be a little uncontrollable
- the army swore allegiance to him so he controlled it fully
what happened during the night of the long knives
Hitler ordered the SS to assasinate and arrests of members of the SA ( rohm), political opponents , former chancellor kurt von schleischer, and von kahr
consequences of the night of the long knives

- SA were removed as a threat
- relationship between hitler and army was strengthened as his decision to side with army was rewarded by their support and ultimately their oath to hitler after Hindenbergs death
