  • collapse of german empire (kaiser abdicates and weimar government is created amidst widespread unrest)
  • treaty of versailles (reparation payments were demanded causing political resentment and fuelling extremism)
  • instability and revolutions ( left and right extremist parties started to try and overthrow the government and become more violent)

  • loss of lives ( 2 million soldiers died, and this also caused trauma leading to the ‘lost generation’
  • hunger and hardship ( naval blockade meant food shortages were common and a flu pandemic was also happening)
  • class tensions ( workers who bore the worst became very resentful of upper class)
  • extremism became more common
