- collapse of german empire (kaiser abdicates and weimar government is created amidst widespread unrest)
- treaty of versailles (reparation payments were demanded causing political resentment and fuelling extremism)
- instability and revolutions ( left and right extremist parties started to try and overthrow the government and become more violent)

- loss of lives ( 2 million soldiers died, and this also caused trauma leading to the ‘lost generation’
- hunger and hardship ( naval blockade meant food shortages were common and a flu pandemic was also happening)
- class tensions ( workers who bore the worst became very resentful of upper class)
- extremism became more common

- devastated economy ( war had left germany in debt and they also needed to pay reparations)
- hyperinflation crisis leading to economic despair
- unemployment and poverty (returning soldier struggled to find jobs, and agricultural production was slow)
