Q

why did Johnson need to make a decision on how involved the US would be in the vietnam. war when he became president

A

because a few weeks before his election , kennedy had given an interview to water cronkite stating that they were going to keep the advisors, but weren’t sending militray, so basically saying they were going to continue the war, but not start or fight it, meaning that johnson needed to decide what role they were actually going to take

A

President Nixon promised to end the war in his election campaign of 1968. He started talks with China and the USSR to try to end the Vietnam War. North Vietnam worried they wouldn’t be able to continue fighting without their allies, so in 1970 they agreed to talks with the US.

26
how did nixon use the paris peace conference to leave Vietnam and how did it work out
he said that it was 'peace with honour', and left (making it look they didn't lose' However fighting didn't stop so it made USA look bad
27
overall, in 4 marks, what justification did Nixon use to leave Vietnam ?
Nixon used the policy of Vietnamization to justify U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam. He claimed that South Vietnam could defend itself with American support, allowing U.S. troops to leave without admitting defeat. Nixon also said he was achieving “peace with honor” through diplomacy and the Paris Peace Accords. Public pressure, rising casualties, and the cost of war also pushed him to find a way out.
