What is Nicotinic acid=Niacin=B3?
A
- most effective drug to increase HDL; 1) decreases hepatic VLDL secretion and 2) inhibits hormone-sensitive lipase in adipose tissue🡪decreased release of FFA’s into serum
- Major effects: increase HDL and decrease LDL; minor effect: decrease triglycerides
- Fish oil can also be used to slightly increase HDL
- Give with aspirin to decrease flushing
