Mycoplasma - did not finish Flashcards
What gram is Mycoplasma and how does it gram stain? Why?
gram positive bacteria
stains gram negative due to no peptidoglycan layer
where are nonhemotropic Mycoplasma bacteria found?
respiratory, articular surfaces, mammary glands, serosa/serous membranes
where are hemotropic Mycoplasma bacteria found?
parasitize RBCS > regenerative anemia
aka hemoplasmas
which Mycoplasma bacteria are notifiable? In what species?
Mycoplasma mycoides mycoides - bovine
Mycoplasma capricolum capripneumoniae - caprine and ovine
Which avian mycobacterium are monitored?
Mycoplasma gallisepticum
Mycoplasma synoviae
what is significant about mycoplasma replication?
smallest self-replicating organisms
Describe Mycoplasma cell wall, peptidoglycan layer, and shape
no cell wall = no peptidoglycan layer = no shape
what stain is used for mycoplasmas?
Dienes stain
what is mycoplasma mistaken for but is not?
Not L-form bacteria - temporary loss of peptidoglycan
what is found in the cell membrane of Mycoplasma?
cholesterol
Describe mycoplasma morphology
colones
nutrients requirements
repro
oxygen
pleomorphic, filterable
colones - fried-egg shaped
fastidious - reduced genome w/ loss of several metabolic pathways
Repro - binary fission or elongation w/break up
oxygen - facultative anaerobes
what are the virulence factors of mycoplasma?
