Muscles Flashcards
Types of muscles
- skeletal
- cardiac
- smooth
How are skeletal muscles anchored to bones?
Via tendons
Are skeletal muscles under voluntary or involuntary control?
Voluntary
Features of muscles tissue
-lie parallel to each other
- made up of may rows of fibre
What are the bundles of fibre called?
Fascicles
What is the name of the tissue sheath that covers the bundles?
Perimysium
What are the individual muscle fibres covered in?
A connective layer called endomysium
What is the sarcoplasm?
The cell membrane of a muscle cell
The cytoplasm of a muscle cell is called?
Sarcoplasm
Why do muscle cells have large amounts of mitochondria?
For ATP production
What is the purpose of myoglobin?
Helps the muscle cells store oxygen
How does the muscle tissue get a striated appearance?
By actin (thin) and myosin (thick)
What happens to abdominal muscles during pregnancy?
-stretched due to growing uterus
-distance between rectum abdominis widens
-connective tissue between rectum abdominis splits = diastasis recti
