Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
Maintaining internal conditions
Homeostasis pathway
1) receptor = identifies the change to the body
2) control centre= initiates the corrective measures
3) effector = carries out the corrective measure
Body temperature
High = receptors on the skin detect the temperature increase and the hypothalamus initiates vasodilation and sweating
Low = skin receptors detect the temperature decrease and the hypothalamus initiates vasal constriction, shivering and piloerection
Blood pressure
Low = detected by baroreceptors in artery walls so signal sent via medulla oblangaba to the heart to increase heart rate and cardiac output
High = baroreceptors cause medulla oblangatato send signals to decrease heart rate
Blood glucose
High= glucose receptors detect the rise so the pancreas secretes insulin which increase glucose absorption into the cells
Low = pancreas secretes less insulin so less glucose is absorbed and glycogenolysis happens
Blood volume
High= atrial receptors cause the kidneys to increase urine volume
Low = kidneys decrease water absorption and decrease urine volume
Feedback
Negative = returns environment back towards set point
Positive = pushes environment further from set point ( eg: oxytocin in childbirth )
