Kidneys Flashcards
Anatomical position
-on posterior abdomen wall
-one on each side of vertebral column
-below the diaphragm
What holds the kidneys is place?
Fat
What encloses the kidneys and the fat?
Renal fascia
Fibrous connective tissue
What enters and leaves the kidneys via the hilum?
- renal blood
- lymph vessel
- ureter
- nerves
Where does the drainage system in the kidneys start from?
Minor calyx
What forms the renal pelvis?
Combining two or three major calyces together
What are the walls of the renal pelvis and major calyces lined with?
Transitional epithelium and contains smooth muscle
What propels urine through towards the bladder?
Peristalsis
What do the closed ends of the nephrons form?
Bowman’s capsule
What is the glomerulus?
A ball of capillaries
Where does the blood enter the glomerulus from?
Renal artery that has been divided into may arterioles
Afferent arteriole
What happens because the afferent arteriole’s diameter is larger than the efferent arteriole’s?
- increased blood pressure and hydrostatic pressure
- filtrate is forced out through the capillaries into the bowman’s capsule as filtrate
What does the efferent arteriole split into?
Peritubular capillary network
Where is the peritubular capillary network?
Wrapped around the nephrons
What does the peritubular capillary network do?
-supplies the tubular tissues with oxygen and nutrients
-removes waste products
