Male Reproductive System Flashcards
Scrotum
Behind the penis
Pouch of skin and muscles and fibrous tissue
Split into two compartments containing 1 testis and 1 epididymis
Testes
Suspended in the scrotum
Tunica vaginalis
Outer covering of membrane formed from peritoneum
Tunica albugineau
Fibrous covering divided into lobes by septa
Tunica vasculosa
Network of capillaries
What is created in Seminiferous tubules
Where sperm cells are created
Leydig cells
Lies betweeen S.T
produces testosterone after puberty
Epididymis
Single highly convoluted tubule forming mass at upper pole of testis
Vans deferens
Duct formed from epididymis as it leaves the scrotum
Spermatic cord
Suspends testes in scrotum
Contains blood and lymph vessels
Blood supply to testes
Testicular arteries
Seminal vesicles location
Lies at posterior base of bladder
Joins van deferens by small duct to form ejaculatory duct which then joins the urethra
Benefit of seminal fluid
Alkaline
Neutralises vaginas acidic environment during intercourse
Coagulation of semen after intercourse
Prostate
Doughnut shaped gland
Function of prostate
Produces milky white fluid
Acidic in nature to help semen coagulate
Bulbourethral gland
Inferior to prostate gland
Responsible for producing fluid that lubricates penis before intercourse
Penis
External male organ
Passage for ejaculation and urine
Root in perenium
Has three columns of erectile tissues
Corpora carvernosa
2 lateral columns
Glans penis
Covered with foreskin
Fundiform and suspensory ligaments
Supports the penis
(Sling like)
Penis nerve supply
Autonomic and somatic
Erection
Parasympathetic stimulus
Increase of blood flow to fill corpus cavernosa
Ejaculation
Sympathetic reflux
Bladder sphincter closes
First phase of ejaculation
Vans deferens contract to squeeze sperm towards the base and mixes with secretions from seminal vesicles forming semen
