Muscle 3 Flashcards
Location of cardiac muscle tissue
only in the MYOCARDIUM
function of intercalated discs
to adhere and prevent separation of cardiac fibers during contraction, and to allow ocmmunication between adjacent fibers
where can you find intercalated discs?
at the Z LINES of the sarcomeres in cardiac muscle only
what kind of cell junctions are found in cardiac muscle
1) fascia adherens (similar to zonula adherens/belt desmosome of epithelia): they attach fibers and anchor actin filaments of the terminal sarcomeres.
2) desmosomes (spot desmosomes/maculae adherens made of intermediate filaments) to bind adjacent cells together
3) gap junctions (made of connexin protein) to couple adjacent cells together
