what are the different phases of a clinical trial at what happens during each stage
phase 0: find a drug which behaves in the way the researches expect it to from lab studies. Involve a small number people at a very low dose
phase 1: small trials, determine how much is a safe dose, what are the side effects
phase 2: medium trial, which types of cancer does the drugs work for, how to manage the side effects. normally used with a placebo
phase 3: large trial, compares the new treatment with the best currently available
phase 4: medium to large, aims to find out the long term risks and benefits
