male reproductive system Flashcards
seminal vesicle
-produces thick, yellowish (60% of semen) containing fructose and vitamin C to nourish sperm and prostaglandins to activate
prostate gland
-secretes milky fluid into the urethra to help to activate sperm
Bulbourethral glands
-produces mucus to cleanse the urethra of acidic urine prior to ejaculation
-mucus serves a lubricant during sexual intercourse
-all secretions combine with sperm to form semen
-alkalinity of semen helps neutralise the acidic environment of vagina and inhibits bacteria
testes
-function as sperm-forming factories in the seminiferous tubules
-interstitial cells in the seminiferous tubules produce testosterone
epididymis
-temporary storage and maturation site for immature sperm
dutus (vas) deferens
-moves sperm by peristalsis into the urethra during ejaculation
scrotum
-divided sac of skin outside the abdomen that maintains testes at 3℃ lower than normal body temperature to produce viable sperm
penis
-male organ of copulation that delivers sperm into the female reproductive tract
-three areas of spongy erectile tissue around the urethra
-fills with blood during sexual excitement
cicumcision
-the foreskin (prepuce) is surgically removed from the tip of the penis
medical benefits of circumcision
-lower risk of urinary tract infection (UTI)
-slightly lower risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV
-lower risk of cancer of penis
-prevention of foreskin infections
-prevention of phimosis- hard to pull the foreskin
circumcision risks
-bleeding
-infection
-injury to the penis or urethra
-tip of penis may become irritated and cause the opening to become too small-> causes urination problems
-may become less sensitive
spermatogenesis
-sperm production
-begins at puberty and continues throughout life
spermatogenesis process
- spermatogonia start by dividing rapidly
- FSH is secreted in increasing amounts to stimulate sperm production
- spermatids with haploid number of chromosomes
testosterone production
-causes secondary sex characteristics
-stimulates reproductive organ development
