lecture 6 Flashcards
damage to prefrontal cortex
case of Phineas Gage- iron rod passed through his head - loss of virtually all the prefrontal cortex of left hemisphere
Phineas gage able to function … but
relatively effectively
memory and speech were preserved
personality changed
prefrontal cortex plays a role in
self control
emotional regulation, planning, concentrating
lobotomy
operation cuts through fibres of the white matter
grey matter not destroyed
lobotomised patients
all had significant personality changes
basic types of response to dangerous aversive situations
freeze flight or fight
skeletomotor responses
autonomic responses to threat and danger
increased heart rate, respiratory rate, sweating, decreased salivation, pupil dilation and look vessel dilation
all responses to threat are controlled by the
hypothalamus connected to the pituitary gland
autonomic response - stressor activates the
hypothalamus - then activates the SNS then adrenal medulla - release adrenaline
hormonal response -
stressor activates hypothalamus which release CRH . pituitary gland releases ACTH and the adrenal gland releases stress hormones
components of emotional response
skeletomotor component
physiological
experiential subjective component of feeling
common sense theory
subjective experience of fear is what motivates behaviour - feelings before behaviour
eg I ran because I was frightened
James lange theory
experience of fear comes AFTER the skeletomotor and autonomic reactions
my hearts pounding because I feel afraid
feelings cause behavioural response
