Learning (Observational Learning) Flashcards
observational learning
learning of new behavior through watching actions of model
bandura
bobo doll experiment
one model was nice, other was mean to doll
kid repeated model’s actions when alone
learning/performance distinction
the fact that learning can take place without actual performance (a kind of latent learning)
second bandora experiment
first group see model rewarded after beating up doll, second group see model punished after beating up doll
first group beat up doll, second group didn’t
but when promised reward if show what model did, second group beat up doll
media
strong evidence that exposure to media violence does have immediate and long term effects, increasing likelihood of aggressive verbal and physical bx and aggressive thoughts and emotions
four elements of observational learning
- attention
- memory
- imitation
- desire
attention
learner must pay attention to model
certain characteristics of models can make this more likely (similar, attractive)
memory
learner must be able to retain memory of what was done
imitation
learner must be capable of reproducing/imitating the actions of the model
mirror neurons may be willing but flesh is weak
desire
learner must have desire or motivation to perform action
if expect reward for example
