dissociative disorders
break in consciousness, memory, or person’s sense of identity
dissociative amnesia
individual can’t remember personal info (episodic long term memory info)
similar to retrograde amnesia but dif cause: stressful trauma
dissociative fugue
person suddenly travels away from home and after can’t remember trip or even personal information such as identity
new identity in new place, make new life, after trauma
dissociative identity disorder
person seems to experience at least two or more distinct personalities existing in one body
core personality, doesn’t know about other personalities, blackouts
depersonalization/derealization disorder
dissociative disorder in which people feel detached and disconnected from selves, bodies, and surroundings
lower brain activity in areas for sense of body awareness
schizophrenia
division in brain among thoughts, feelings, and bx
long-lasting psychotic disorder in which there is an inability to distinguish what is real from fantasy as well as disturbances in thinking, emotions, behavior, and perception
delusions
disorders in thinking
false beliefs about the world, include delusions of persecution, delusions of reference (other people, tv, books speaking specifically to them), delusions of influence (controlled by external forces), delusions of grandeur

string words together on basis of sounds
meaningless and jumbled mixture of words and phrases
hallucinations
hear voices or see things or people that aren’t really there
flat affect
shows little or no emotion
catatonia
extremes of movement
wildly excessive movement or total lack thereof
positive symptoms

excess or distortion of normal functions, such as hallucinations or delusions
decrease of normal functions, such as poor attention or lack of affect
stress-vulnerability model
assumes people with genetic markers for schizophrenia have physical vulnerability to the disorder but won’t develop it unless exposed to environmental or emotional stress at critical times in development
diffusion tensor imaging
schizophrenic patients have differences in cingulum bundle and frontal/temporal lobe
