What are the aspects of formal learning?
Controlled by organization Relevance is variable Delay between learning and use of knowledge Highly structured Specific outcomes
What are the aspects of informal training?
Controlled by learner Relevance is high Learning used immediately on the job Unstructured Not specific outcomes
What are off-the-job instructional methods?
Trainees receive instruction while not actually performing their normal job at that point in time.
Lecture, discussion, simulations, etc.
What is on-the-job training?
Trainees receive instruction and training at their work station from a supervisor or experienced coworker.
Most common approach to training though often unstructured with trainers poorly fit to train others
What is mentoring?
The method in which a member of an organization takes interest in the career of another member. Focus on career development and is generally voluntary.
What is coaching?
One-on-one individualized learning. A more experienced person is formally called upon to help another person develop their insights and techniques pertinent to the accomplishment of their job.
