Why do employees unionize?
Collective voice, economic needs, dissatisfaction with management, social and leadership needs, politics
What is union acceptance?
Organization accepts the fact they will be unionized
What is union resistance?
Organization actively opposes unionization process
What is union substitution?
Organization eliminates employee desire to unionize by providing superior employment conditions
What is union removal?
Organization engages in union busting leading to decertification
What is collective bargaining?
The process where a union and employer negotiate either a first collective agreement or the renewal of a previous agreement.
What is distributive or positional bargaining?
Zero-sum bargaining that creates a win lose situation where both parties compete to win over the other
What is interest based or integrative bargaining?
Positive-sum, collaborative bargaining that focuses on creating win-win solutions
What is intra-organizational bargaining?
When the bargaining spokesperson has to respond to two demands - those from across the table and those from their own political organization.
What is the bargaining zone?
Where the minimum acceptable demand of one party and the highest offer of the other party overlap
What may happen if the union and management cannot agree on terms?
Conciliation/Mediation
Interest Arbitration (conventional, final offer, first agreement)
