Lab: Grasshopper Anatomy Flashcards
What is the function of the head?
Most anterior body segment’ houses eyes, antennae, and mouthparts
What is the function of the thorax?
Middle body segment; divided into prothorax, mesothorax, and metathorax
What is the function of the abdomen
Posterior body segment; houses reproductive and digestive organs
What is the function of Clypeus?
Suspension point for the labrum
What is the function of Labrum?
Protects delicate mouthparts; moves back and forth during feeding
What is the function of Mandibles?
Grabbing and tearing food into smaller pieces
What is the function of Maxillae?
Move food particles into pre-oral cavity for eating
What is the function of Maxillary palp?
Tests the food quality using chemoreception
What is the function of the Hypopharynx?
Acts as a tongue, moving food around inside pre-oral cavity
What is the function of the Labium?
Helps hold food in place while eating
What is the function of the labial palps?
Use sensory function to test quality of food prior to eating
What is the function of salivary glands?
Aid in digestion by breaking down food chemically with saliva
What is the function of simple eyes/ocelli?
Discern between dark and light
What is the function of compound eyes?
Picks up motion and form and discerns distance of objects from grasshopper
What is the function of Antennae?
Chemical and tactile senses, ex. touch, wind direction, velocity, odors, vibrations
What is the function of the Prothorax?
Anterior portion; supports first pair of walking legs
What is the function of the Mesothorax?
Supports first pair of wings and second pair of walking legs
What is the function of the Metathorax?
Houses second pair of wings, jumping legs, and two pairs of spiracles
What is the function of the Tegmina?
Forewings, protect more membraneous hindwing underneath.
What is the function of the Hindwings?
Contribute 3 times as much flight lift than the tegmina
What is the function of Coxa?
Attaches leg to body
What is the function of the Trochanter?
Head of the femur, follows coxa
