lab 1 Flashcards
base
lower support of microscope
turret
allows the oculars to revolve around once the screw is loose
arm
connects base to head
ocular
contains a lens that magnifies by 10x. one has a pointer
objective lens
4 lenses that have magnifications of 4x, 10x, 40x, and 100x (oil immersion lens)
all of these lenses are multiplied by 10x due to the occular lens (40x, 100x, 400x, 1000x)
nosepiece
rotating mechanism below turret with lenses attached. used to switch lenses
stage
flat surface that supports the slide over the hole that allows light from below
mechanical stage
holds slide in place with a spring clip, allows for slide manipulation
mechanical stage knobs
one moves slide vertically, the other horizontally
coarse focus knob
changes distance between objective lens and slide to permit rough focusing. dont use with 40x or 100x lenses
fine focus knob
permits precise focusing once coarse focusing is complete
condenser lens
small substage lens that focuses light onto the slide
condenser adjustment knob
moves condenser lens up or down. generally best kept close to stage
iris diaphragm
regulates the amount of light passing through condenser lens. reducing light increases contrast of semitransparent objects
iris diaphragm level
bent arm attached to the bottom of the condenser. adjusts iris opening size
