joints Flashcards
joint classification
- function –> range of motion
- structure –> what is the joint made up of
range of motion classification
- synarthrosis
- amphiarthrosis
- diarthrosis
synarthrosis
an immovable joint
ex… sutures of the cranial bones
amphiarthrosis
a slightly moveable joint
ex… the vertebrae
diarthrosis
a freely moveable joint
ex… shoulder joint, hip joints
synarthrosis subcategories
- sutures
- gomphosis
- synchondrosis
- synostosis
sutures
joints made by interlocking bones
ex… sutures of the cranium
gomphosis

synchondrosis
joint within the epiphysis of the long bones
ex… epiphyseal plate
synostosis
joint between two fused bones
ex… the fusion of the three coxal bones of the pelvic girdle
-ilium
-pubis
-ischium
amphiarthrosis subcategories
- syndesmosis
- symphysis
syndesmosis
ligaments connecting two bones BUT also limit their motion
ex… the distal joint of the radius and ulna
ex… the joint between the tibia and fibula
ex… intervertebral discs
symphysis
bones separated by a wedge/pad of cartilage
ex… between the pubic bones
distal radius and ulna restriction
unlike the proximal joint of the radius and ulna the distal joint can’t protonate/supinate
the proximal joint is diarthrosis
diarthrosis subcategories
- synovial joints
synovial joints
found at the ends of a long bone
ex… shoulder joint
ex… hip joint
ex…knee joint
ex… elbow joint
monoaxial, biaxial, triaxial
mono –> 1x axis
bi –> 2x axis
tri –> 3x axis
joint cheat sheet
synovial joints breakdown
six characteristics…
1. joint capsule
2. articular cartilages
3. joint cavity w/ synovial fluid
4. synovial membrane
5. accessory structures (bursae ligaments, tendons)
6. sensory nerves and blood vessels
synoviocytes
cells of the synovial joint. present in the synovial fluid
bursae
the bursae is a sac like part of the synovial joint that lubricates the joint
it acts as a cushion and gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues
the bursae be inflamed resulting in bursitis
the histological structure of joints
- bony fusion
- fibrous joint
- cartilaginous joint
- synovial joint
bony fusion
frontal bone fusion
fibrous joint
the sutures of the skull
cartilaginous joint
ex… pubic symphysis
synovial joint
ball and socket / hinge joints
ex… knee and elbow joints
ex… joints of the fingers
interpharangeal joint
synovial joint between the phalanges of the fingers
metacarpopharangeal joint
synovial joint between the metacarpal bone and proximal phalanges of the fingers
synovial fluid functions
- joint lubrication
- shock absorption
synovial joint accessory structures
- menisci (lateral + medial)
- ligaments (fibular collateral ligament)
- tendons (quadriceps tendon)
- bursae
strength vs mobility tradeoff
the stronger the joint, the less mobility it has
this is to reduce the changes of injury at the cost of range of motion
ex… the acrominoclaviular is very mobile, but easy to break
types of movement
- linear
- angular
- circumduction
- rotation
- special movements
linear movements
bones gliding past each other
ex… carpals to carpals
ex… tarsals to tarsals
ex… clavicle to sternum
angular movements
movements along an axis
- abduction / adduction
- flexion / extension
gliding joints
abduction / adduction
lateral movement outwards
ex… the abductional movement of the wrist is limited by the styloid process of the radius
flexion / extension
ex… hips forwards and backwards
rotational movement
protonation / supination
ex… the protonation / supination of the proximal radioulnar joint
circumduction movement
moving the joint in a circular manner
ex… the hip
special movements
- inversion / eversion –> foot
- dorsiflexion / plantar flexion –> foot (up and down)
- lateral flexion –> neck side to side
- protraction / retraction –> TMJ
- opposition –> thumb
- depression / elevation –> TMJ
further synovial joint classification
- gliding joints, monoaxial
- pivot joint, monoaxial
- hinge joint, monoaxial
- saddle joint, biaxial
- ellipsoid joint, biaxial
- ball and socket joint, triaxial
gliding joint example
sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular, intercarpal
pivot joint examples
atlantoaxial, proximal radioulnar
saddle joint example
first carpometacarpal
-flexion / extension
-abduction / adduction
hinge joint examples
elbow and knee joints
ellipsoid joint examples

shoulder and hip joints
TMJ
temporomandibular joint, made up of the condylar process of the mandible and the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone
- stylomandibular ligament
- lateral ligament
- sphenomandibular joint
stylomandibular joint
connects the styloid process to the mandible
lateral ligament
connects the zygomatic process to the mandibular condylar process
sphenomandibular ligament
connects the sphenoid bone to the mandible
the 5 intervertebral ligaments
- anterior longitudinal
- interspinous
- supraspinous
- posterior longitudinal
- ligamentum flavum
anterior longitudinal ligament
stabilizes vertebral bodies from the front

stabilizes the vertebrae from the back
ligamentum flavum
elastic ligaments that connect the laminae of the vertebrae
