Interspecific Interaction Flashcards
What is niche?
Biotic and abiotic resources that a species uses
What is realized niche?
The resources actually used
What is fundamental niche?
Potential use of resources
What is mutualism?
Both species benefit (+/+)
What is commensalism?
One species benefits while the other doesn’t have anything change (+/0)
What is parasitism?
A organism feeds off of another animal to live (-/+)
What is predation?
A animal eats another species to survive (-/+)
How are parasitism and predation different?
Parasitism wants the organism to survive so it can continue to survive while predation needs to kill the animal to eat it
What is herbivory?
Animals feed off plants to survive (-/+)
What is the difference between facultative and obligatory?
Facultative receive benefits from each other but can other live without each other while obligatory can not live without each other
What will happen if niches of two species overlap a lot?
There will be a drastic decrease in one or both species due to the lack of resources
What are some ways species can partition their niches?
- Feeding at different times
- Using different areas
- Eat different foods
What is an example of Commesalism?
Tree frogs using plants as protection
What will happen if niches of two species overlap a little?
There will be competition but the overall species will be fine
What is Gous’s Competitive Exclusion Principle?
No two similar species can occupy the same niche at the same time
