Cycles Flashcards
What do living things need nitrogen for?
Protein, DNA, and RNA
What is Nitrogen Fixation?
Nitrogen from the atmosphere converted to Ammonia or Ammanium
What is Nitrification?
Ammonia or Ammanium is converted to Nitrate or Nitrite
What is denitrification?
Converting Nitrate and Nitrite back into the atmosphere
What are the inputs and outputs of photosynthesis?
Sunlight + CO2 + H2O –> O2 + sugar (glucose)
What are the inputs and outputs of cellular respiration?
O2 + glucose –> energy + CO2 + H2O
What type of organisms perform photosynthesis?
Plants and Bacteria
How do humans affect the carbon and nitrogen cycles?
Carbon: By introducing things like fossil fuels to the atmosphere
Nitrogen: putting fertilizer in the ground which causes a surplus of nitrogen in the air, leading to greenhouse gases
What type of cycle does not have the atmosphere as their main abiotic reservoir?
The Phosphorus Cycle
What are some differences between how energy and carbon flow through a food chain?
- Carbon goes back to the atmosphere
- Energy becomes heat
What type of organisms perform cellular respiration?
Animals, Plants, Fungi, and Bacteria (Almost all living things)
How does BTB work?
It is something you can add to water where the more acid will causes it to turn from blue to yellow
How will a BTB test tube look if there is a plant with dark conditions?
The water inside will be yellow due to the plant releasing carbon dioxide
What is a abiotic reservoir?
Where a cycle will occur
How will a BTB test tube look with just a plant in a light condition?
The water will remain blue
