Cell Membrane Flashcards
What is simple diffusion?
Small, uncharged cells go from a high to low through the cell membrane
What is facilitated diffusion?
Large, charged cells move through a protein from a high to low concentration
What is osmosis?
Diffusion of water across a semipermeable membrane to dilute higher solute concentrations
What is hypertonic osmosis?
A higher solute % and lower water %
What is hypotonic osmosis?
A lower solute % and higher water %
What is isotonic osmosis?
Equal solute %
What is active transport?
Cells may move molecules against concentration gradient
What is endocytosis?
A cell engulfs extracellular material by invaginating its plasma membrane to form a vesicle containing the ingested material
What is exocytosis?
The contents of a cell vacuole are released to the exterior through fusion of the vacuole membrane with the cell membrane
What are the properties and structure of phospholipids?
