Genes Flashcards
What is a codon?
A sequence of 3 nucleotides on mRNA
What is an anticodon?
Sequence of 3 bases
What is translation?
Process where a cell makes proteins using the genetic info carried in messenger RNA
What is the start codon?
AUG/Met.
What is the stop codon?
UAA, UAG, and UGA
What are positive transcription factors?
Factors that continue to allow transcription to occur
What are negative transcription factors?
Factors that stop transcription from occurring
What is affinity?
The strength of the attraction between two substances
What are the A, P, and T sites for?
A site: matches correct incoming tRNA to the next codon in the mRNA
P site: holds tRNA carrying growing polypeptide chain
E site: empty tRNA leaves ribosome from exit site
What is the role of mRNA?
Contain message/code for amino acid sequence
What is the role of tRNA?
Transfers amino acids, contain anticodons that pair with mRNA codons to put a.a. in the correct order
What is the role of rRNA?
Facilitates matching of mRNA and tRNA, joins amino acids to synthesize protein
What does AAG code for?
Lys.
What does is mean if a codon is redundant?
It means it will repeat
What does UGG code for?
Trp.
