Chemical Bonding Flashcards
What happens with electrons during ionic bonding?
They leave the lower electronegativity and get added on to the higher electronegativity
What happens with electrons during polar covalent bonding?
One atom that has a stronger pull takes the electrons
What happens with electrons during non polar covalent bonding?
The electrons are distributed equally between the two atoms
What are the differences between polar and non polar covalent bonds?
Polar is not equally distributed with electrons and are opposites while non polar is evenly distributed
What is a non polar covalent bond?
Equal sharing of electrons
What is a polar covalent bond?
Unequal sharing of electrons
What is a ionic bond?
No sharing of electrons in bond
What is electronegativity?
Measure of how strongly atoms attract new bonding electrons to themselves
What section of the periodic table has the weakest pull?
The farther right you go, the weaker the atoms become
What section of the periodic table has the strongest pull?
The higher you go on the periodic table, the stronger the pull is
