Cell Cycle Flashcards
What is the order of the cell cycle?
G1, S, G2, M, and possibly G0
What occurs during G1?
The cell increases in size and prepares to replicate its DNA
What occurs during S?
The cell replicates DNA and in the end, the cell has two complete sets of chromosomes
What occurs during G2?
The cell continues to grow and prepares for division
What occurs during M?
The cell divides, resulting in two new identical daughter cells through mitosis
What occurs during G0?
Cells don’t prepare to divide or divide, they remain active and perform their normal tasks
What occurs during interphase and what stages are included in it?
Cells prepare for mitosis and G1, S, G2 are included
What role do growth factors play?
They are signaling molecules that play a crucial role in cell growth, differentiation, and survival
What role do cyclins have?
They regulate the cell cycle by binding to and activating CDKs
What role do CDKs have?
Regulate the eukaryotic cell cycle and transcription
What are some inhibitory proteins?
CDK and p53
What are some stationary proteins?
Cyclin and growth factors
What is the role of p53?
Regulate cell division and cell death, prevent mutations
What are proto-oncogenes and what are some examples?
Normal genes that play a crucial role in cell growth and division
Includes epidermal growth rate
What are tumor suppressor genes and what are some examples?
Genes that help prevent cancer by controlling cell growth and division but if they are mutated they can stop functioning
