DNA Processes Flashcards
What is the leading strand?
The opposite strand that is going towards the fork and continuously builds
What is the lagging strand?
The opposite strand that is going away from the fork that builds and then has to make up work/has fragments
What is semi-discontinuous?
It is what DNA is, meaning that one is synthesized continually (leading) and one is discontinuously (lagging)
What is semiconservative replication?
After one round of replication, every new DNA double helix would be a hybrid
What are okazaki fragments?
The fragments in between the lagging strand that later get patched up by ligase
What is helicase?
The enzyme that “unzips” the DNA strand
What is primase?
An enzyme that adds RNA polymerase to the single strand of DNA
What is DNA Polymerase lll?
An enzyme that lays down nucleotides to build the daughter DNA strand
What is DNA Polymerase l?
An enzyme that removes the RNA polymerase and replaces it with nucleotides
What is ligase?
The “glue” for strands that patch up okazaki fragments
What is the order of DNA Replication?
- Helicase
- Primase
- DNA Polymerase lll
- DNA Polymerase l
- Ligase
