Interactionalism 2 Flashcards
what did Mac an Ghaill do
Mac an Ghaill studied working class students in a working class comprehensive in the midlands.
He found that distinct working class male peer groups developed as a result of setting, student-teacher relationships, position of the students in the working class, and changes in the local economy
Working class MACHO LADS, were dismissive of other working class boys, who worked hard amd aspired to middle class careers referring to them as DICkHEAD ACHIEVERS, whilst the middle class REAL ENGLISHMEN projected an image of EFFORTLESS ACHIEVEMTN of succeeding without trying.
what was the developemnt found with the Mac an Ghaill study
a development form this was when Mac an Ghaill and |Redman found that the dominant definition of masculinity changed form macho lads in the lower secondary school to one of the ENGLISH GENTLEMEN in the sixth form, This represents a shift away form one of toughness to one of intellectual ability.
What did archer et al say
He was focussed on the interaction the interaction between working class pupils identities and school and how this produces underachievement. To understand this relationship, they drew on the work of bordieu and the concept of habitus
What is habitus
- Habitus refers to the learned taken for granted assumptions, outlook, expectations and ways of being, doing and having. This could be in terms of lifestyles, consumption leisure pursuits. One habitus is not intrinsically better than the other, just different. The middle class however, have the power to define the middle class habitus as superior and to impose it in the education system
- WHAT DOES BORDIEU REFER THIS AS
bordieu referred to this as SYMBOLIC violence
This habitus then is the norm for schools and middle class pupils, hence putting middle class pupils at an advantage, as the values system in school is one they are already familiar with and are at ease with, this concept is liked with bordieus cultural capital
