what does the women’s movement, feminism and equality in the family entail
The women’s movement and feminism have achieved considerable success in improving the rights and raising the self-esteem of women.
They have challenged the view of women as housewives with more people becoming aware of PATRIARCHY. This has led to major changes in the family: THE SYMMETRICAL FAMILY being one. YOUNG AND WILMOTT claim that there is now equality within the family with JOINT CONJUGAL ROLES. To achieve this independence women need well paid jobs and therefore good qualifications
what does changes in womens employment entail
There have been severeal important changes in womens employment
what does girls becoing more ambitious entail
There have been growing opportunities for women in the service sector as jobs have increased in these areas. Girls have then become more ambitious; many girls grow up with mothers paid in full time employment.
Sharpe found in 1976 girls priorities were love, marriage, husband, children jobs and careers in that order. When she repeated in 1994 she found they had changed to be a job, career and supporting themselves.
What does the equality opportunities policy entail
Policies have bee implemented in education such as removing gender bias for teaching resources, thus removing stereotypes in the curriculum. Campaigns such as WISE (women into science and engineering) GIST, (girls into science and technology) challenge gender bias in subjects.
What does positive role models within schools entail
there are now positive role models within school - female teachers play a n important role in shaping young girl’s education. By having these role models, it shows them that they can achieve various positions of importance and gives them non-traditional goals to aim for.
What does selection and league tables entail
Marketisation policies have created a more competitive climate in which schools see girls as more desirable recruits because they achieve better exam results.
JACKSON notes that the introduction of league tables has improved opportunities for girls: high achieving girls are attracted to schools, whereas low achieving boys are not. Girls are recruited by good schools so are more likely to do well.
what problems come form seeing all girls are high achievers
One problem is regarding seeing girls as high achievers is that low achieving girls are disregarded and overlook social differencees
Gendered subjects and Women in employment
girls still choose subjects which are considered to be feminine- Art subjects that then shape gendered career paths. Women are still less likely than men with similar qualifications to achieve similar levels of success in employment. However young women form 16 - 24 are now more qualified than men, holding degree qualifications or higher.
what is the liberal feminist view on gender and educational achievement
dem shits too busy celebrating the progress made so far by improving achievement. They believe further progress will be made by positive role models and equal opportunities policy- similar to functionalist view on meritocracy
what is the radical feminist view on gender and educational achievement
take a more critical view; while they still see girls gettin p’s they still argue that tghe system is patriarchal thye argue:
Sexual harassement happens and exists in school towards girls
Education limits career choices
Women under presented in areas of the curriculum e.g. secondary school history - Women-free zone
