What is Ibuprofen commonly used to treat?
Fever, pain, dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual cramps), arthritis
Also referred to as Advil, Ibuprofen is a common over-the-counter medication.
What classification does Ibuprofen fall under?
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) , analgesic, nonopioid drug
It is commonly used for its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties.
What is the mechanism of action of Ibuprofen?
Reversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and 2 (COX-1 and 2) enzymes
This leads to decreased formation of prostaglandin precursors.
What properties does Ibuprofen have?
Antipyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory
These properties make it effective in treating various conditions.
What is the onset of action for Ibuprofen when taken orally for analgesic effects?
30-60 minutes
Maximum effect for antipyretic properties is 2-4 hours.
What is the typical half-life elimination of Ibuprofen?
Around 2 hours
What advantages does Ibuprofen have over other NSAIDs?

What CNS adverse reactions can occur with Ibuprofen?
Dizziness, fatigue, headache, nervousness
What CVS adverse reactions can occur with Ibuprofen?
Increased fluid retention, edema (rare)
What is the adult dosing for mild to moderate pain with Ibuprofen?
400 mg PO every 4-6 hours prn
What is the adult dosing for primary dysmenorrhea with Ibuprofen?
400 mg PO every 4 hours prn
What is the adult dosing range for arthritis with Ibuprofen?
500 mg to 3.2 g/day every 4 hours prn
What is the pediatric dosing for fever reduction in patients with a temperature up to 39?
5 mg/kg PO every 6-8 hours
What is the pediatric dosing for fever reduction in patients with a temperature greater than 39?
10 mg/kg PO every 6-8 hours
What is the pediatric dosing for juvenile arthritis?
30-40 mg/kg/day PO in 3 to 4 divided doses
