histology in medicine Flashcards
what is histology ?
microscopic analysis of tissues and organs in the body
what type of microscope is histology primary use ?
light microscope
what steps once the cells have been harvested in histology does the tissues undergo ?
-fixation
-embedding
-sectioning
-staining
why do we study histology ?
intimate knowledge of the microscopic structure of cells , tissues and organs
understand what abnormal cells , tissue and organs look like
what image does light microscope produce ?
can see cell but not internal structures
what image does transmission electron microscope produce ?
can see internal structures
what image does a scanning electron microscope produce ?
a 3d image
why does tissue preparation require staining ?
provides contrast / colour to specimens
allows us to identify tissue structures
what is the most common stain to use in order to prepare the tissue ?
haematoxylin and eosin (H&E)
Is haematoxylin positively or negatively charged ? what type of molecule does this stain dye ?
positively charged
will stain negatively charged molecules (blue )
stains DNA
Is eosin positively or negatively charged ? what type of molecule does this stain dye ?
negatively charged
stain positively charged molecules ( pink / red)
stain proteins
is haematoxylin basic or acidic ?
basic
is eosin acidic or basic ?
acidic
what are the four types of tissues ?
epithelial
connective
muscle
nervous
