endocrine system A + P Flashcards
What is a hormone ?
chemical messenger
only affects target cells
secreted by endocrine glands or tissues into blood
give some examples of what the endocrine system does
controls homeostasis
maintains water balance
controls uterine contractions
controls milk production
regulates ions
regulates metabolism and growth
regulates heart rate and blood pressure
monitors blood glucose levels
aids immune system
reproduction functions
what is an exocrine gland ?
releases secretions to tissue by ducts
what is endocrine gland ?
ductless , releases into blood
compare electrical and chemical signals in the nervous system and endocrine system
nervous = chemical and electrical signal
endocrine = chemical signals
compare response time in the nervous system and endocrine system
nervous = responds and stops quickly
endocrine = slower to respond and stops
compare where each effect in the nervous system and endocrine system
nervous = targets specific organs
endocrine = hormones goes everywhere
what does intracellular mean ?
produce in one of part a cell and move to another part of same cells
what does intercellular mean ?
released from one cell and binds to receptors on another cell
what are the types of intercellular signals ?
autocrine
paracrine
neurotransmitters
pheromones
hormones
what are autocrine signals ?
released by cells and have local effects on the same cell
what are paracrine signals ?
released by cells that affect other cell types in close proximity
what are neurotransmitters secreted by?
nerve cells
what are the three hormone classifications ?
steroids
monoamines
peptides
what are the two types of hormones ?
water soluble
lipid hormone
