glucocorticoids Flashcards
Physiological effects of gucocorticoids on metabolism
- Metabolism:
○ Elevation of blood glucose
○ Suppress synthesis of proteins
○ Stimulation of lipolysis
Physiological effects of gucocorticoids on Cardiovascular and Hematologic Systems
○ Increase RBC and neutrophile
○ Decrease lymphocytes, eosinophils, basophils and monocytes
glucocorticoids on CNS
neural excitability
glucocorticoids on Stress response
maintain BP and blood glucose level
glucocorticoids on Fluids and electrolytes
promote retention of sodium and water, promote excretion of potassium
glucocorticoids on Neonatal Respiratory system
hasten maturation of the lungs
Control of Glucocorticoid Synthesis and Secretion
negative feedback system
Glucocorticoid receptors are located _____ the cell rather than ____
Glucocorticoid receptors are located inside the cell rather than on cell surface
Glucocorticoids modulate the ______ rather than ______
Glucocorticoids modulate the production of regulatory proteins rather than the activity of signaling pathways
Side Effects of glucocorticoids
- Osteoporosis (systemic glucocortioid therapy)
- Infection
- Impaired Wound healing
- Hyperglycemia
- Myopathy
- Fluid and electrolyte disturbance
- Growth delay
- Psychologic Disturbances: insomnia, anxiety
- Cataracts and glaucoma
- Peptic Ulcer Disease
- Iatrogenic Cushing Syndrome
- Adrenal Suppression (over 3 weeks)
DI of glucocorticoids
- Potassium loss
- NSAIDs: increase risk of GI bleed
- Insulin and oral hypoglycemic
- Vaccine: immunosuppressant action of glucocorticoids
- Contraindicated for patients with systemic fungal infection and those receiving live virus vaccines.
