What is GDS
A GDS is providing automated services (real time inventory search) to travel vendors such as hotels, airlines and car rental companies. A GDS hotel’s inventory and rates can be accessed and booked by any travel agent that subscribes to the GDS.
What is SABRE
Sabre Global Distribution System used by travel agents around the world. The Sabre GDS enables companies such as American Airlines, American Express, BCD Travel, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Hogg Robinson Group (HRG), Expedia, Holiday Autos, to search, price, book, and ticket travel services provided by airlines, hotels, car rental companies, rail providers and tour operators.
What is Amadeus?
Amadeus was originally created as neutral GDS by Air France, Lufthansa, Iberia and SAS in 1987. The GDS initially focussed on reservations, inventory and pricing offered by provider (airlines) to end users and travel agents. All the information related to a booking was stored in a PNR (passenger name record ) that exists on the GDS. Eventually PNR concept was broadened to accommodate other travel industry entities like hotel , car and rail bookings. r/>

GDS does not allow independent loading. hotels etc. must work through a representation company to be present on the GDS

Any indications of the cost of a provider being on gds?
Usually there is an annual fee that has to be paid based on the bedrooms you have, You can get quotes from different PROVIDERS, some providers do not charge an annual fee but based on the sales, Every GDS booking has a GDS connectivity fee and a fee for the service provider. These are usually fixed fees.10 nights you pay for the bookings. Corporate rate is usually non commissionable, if you have BAR rate TA tend to book at a rate commissionable, you may have to factor in 8-10% commission.
What is a Consortia program?
consortia is a “rate negotiated between a hotel company and a travel agency group. Viewership of these rates in the GDS by a TA or other GDS user is restricted and the rate may be booked only after entry of either the Agents or Client authorization code.”
What is consortia in hotel trade?
