- Depresses seizures by affecting the movement of sodium and calcium into neural tissue

Indications:
A
- Generalized tonic-clonic seizures

Adverse Effects:
A
- Depression of cardiac conduction
- Sedation
- Nystagmus
- Delirium
- Tremors
- Ataxia
- Dysarthria
- HTN
- Hypotension
- Pain/irritation at injection site

Contraindications:
A
- Sinus bradycardia
- SA block
- Second and third degree heart block
- Adams-Stokes syndrome
- Known sensitivity to hydantoins

Dosage (Adult and Pediatrics):
A
- Dosing is ordered in milligram phenytoin equivalents (PE) instead of mgs
- Administer 15-20 mg PE/kg IV, IO
- Administered at rate of less than 150 PE/min

Special Considerations:
A
- Continuously monitor the ECG and BP during administration
- Monitor IV site for signs of infiltration
