Feedback Control - Cardiovascular Flashcards
what is blood prressure?
the outwards pressure exerted by blood on blood vessel walls
what is a normal value for blood pressure?
<140/90
what is systolic blood pressure?
pressure exerted by blood when the heart contracts
what is diastolic pressure?
pressure exerted by the blood when the heart relaxes
what is the definition of hypertensionn?
clinical blood pressure of 140/90 or more AND a day time average of 135/85 or higher
what is pulse pressure?
the difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure
what is MAP?
average arterial blood pressure during a single cardiac cycle
which is longer in a normal cardiac cycle - diastole or systole?
diastole
should be twice as long
how do you calculate MAP?
[(2xdiastolic) + systolic] / 3
what is a normal range for MAP?
70-105mmHg
why does MAP need to be AT LEAST 60mmHg?
to perfuse the brain, heart and kidneys
what type of feedback mechanism is the baroreceptor reflex for short term regulation of MAP?
negative feedback mechanism
what is the sensor in the baroreceptor reflex?
baroreceptors
what is the control centre in the baroreceptor reflex?
cardiovascular control centre in the medulla
what are the effectors in the baroreceptor reflex?
heart
blood vessels
