I went to Tonino’s Pizzeria in Greenock because I had seen an advert on a taxi the day before. I went there thinking it must be a familiar place, with a history. When I asked about the history, the answers were unclear. Later I did a little research online and it turned out that the pizzeria has only been growing for eight years, despite the owner having an Italian surname. All this goes to show that it is not always a good idea to rely on stereotypes.
Sono andato alla Pizzeria di Tonino, a Greenock, perché il giorno prima avevo visto una pubblicità su un taxi. Ci sono andato convinto che dovesse essere un posto familiare, con una storia. Quando ho chiesto della storia, le risposte non erano chiare. In seguito ho fatto una piccola ricerca online e si è scoperto che la pizzeria cresce solo otto anni fa, nonostante il proprietario avesse un cognome italiano. Tutto questo dimostra che non è sempre una buona idea affidarsi agli stereotipi.
I went to the McClean Gallery, at the Watts Institution in Greenock, to see a new exhibition of paintings selected from the institution’s collection by the painter Alison Watts, a famous Scottish painter whose name has nothing to do with the institution. In fact, she was born and raised in Greenock, and visited the gallery many times as a young girl with her father, also a painter.
Sono andato alla McClean Gallery, presso la Watts Institution di Greenock, per vedere una nuova mostra di dipinti scelti dalla collezione istituzionale dalla pittrice Alison Watts, una famosa pittrice scozzese il cui nome non ha nulla a che fare con quello dell’istituzione. Infatti lei è stata nata e cresciuta a Greenock, e da ragazzina ha visitato molte volte la galleria con il padre, anche un pittore.
At Tonino’s in Greenock I ordered a plate of fried courgettes as a starter. At first I didn’t notice that the menu said “fried courgettes”: a mistake? I thought they were going to be courgettes fried in oil… but no. They were little packets of batter filled with courgettes, and deep fried. I forgot that I was in Scotland, the world capital of batter and deep-frying cuisine. I think Napoli has second place in this world competition.
Da Tonino’s a Greenock ho ordinato un piatto di zucchine fritte, come antipasto. All’inizio non mi ero accorto che sul menu c’era scritto “zucchini fritti”: un errore? Pensavo che sarebbero state zucchine fritte in olio… ma no. Erano piccoli pacchetti di pastelle riempiti di zucchine, e fritte in profondità. Mi si è fuggito che ero in Scozia, la capitale mondiale di pastella e la cucina di friggere in profondità. Credo che il Napoli abbia il secondo posto in questa competizione mondale.
I found this description of how my zucchine dish was prepared. Deep frying is a cooking method in which the food is completely immersed in hot fat, most commonly oil, rather than in a thin layer, as in conventional frying, done in a pan.

Greenock was a very important and wealthy place in the 1800s. It has many grand buildings to illustrate this fact. One of these is The Watts Institution. The institution is named after the famous James Watts, an engineer who was very important in the development of the steam engine. The institution is many things in one, a museum, a library, and an art gallery. The art gallery at the institution is called The McClean. When I visited the gallery last week I was able to see a selection of paintings chosen from the collection by a contemporary painter named Alison Watts, who was born and raised in Greenock, although she is not a relation of James Watts. I really liked the paintings she chose, especially one by Francis Cadell, of a lady whose face is reflected in a mirror.
Greenock era un posto molto importante e molto ricco nel ottocento. Ha molti grandi edifici ad illustrare questo fatto. Uno di questi è The Watts Institution. L’istituzione deve il nome al famoso James Watts, un ingegnere molto importante nello sviluppo della macchina a vapore. L’istituzione è diverse cose in una, un museo, una biblioteca, e una galleria d’arte. La galleria d’arte presso l’istituzione si chiama The McClean. Quando ho visitato la galleria la settimana scorsa ero in grado di vedere una selezione di dipinti scelta dalla collezione, da una pittrice contemporanea si chiama Alison Watts, che è stata nata e cresciuta a Greeenock, nonostante non sia una relazione di James Watts. I dipinti che ha scelti mi sono piaciuti molto, sopratutto un opera di Francis Cadell di una donna, il cui volto è rispecchiato in uno specchio
Greenock’s large buildings reflects its nineteenth-century richness. The city merchants wanted to demonstrate their success in the buildings that surrounded them. They were proud of both their successes and the city where they had grown up and had prospered. It is difficult to imagine today this sense of belonging to a place that carried a sense of duty towards the city with it, and also the desire to make it magnificent,
I grandi edifici di Greenock rispecchiano la sua ricchezza del ottocento. I mercanti della città volevano dimostrare il loro successo negli edifici che li circondavano. Erano orgogliosi, sia dei loro successi sia della città in cui eravano cresciuti e avevano prosperati. È difficile immaginare oggi, questo senso di appartenenza a un luogo che portava con sé, un senso del dovere verso la città, e anche il desiderio di renderla magnifica.
I went to Greenock in the rain a while ago and found out that a cruise ship had arrived. It was a surprise to find such a large ship docked there, but I think this must be the closest place to Glasgow where you could take a large ship, and transfer by bus into the city. However, some of the passengers had decided to stay in Greenock. You could tell they were passengers from the ship because they were all wearing the same plastic coats given to them by the ship. It turns out there is a small firefighter museum in the centre which is normally closed most days, but when a cruise ship arrives the museum opens. The museum staff were retired firefighters and we all enjoyed chatting to them. It was a nice visit.
Sono andato a Greenock sotto la pioggia un po’ di tempo fa e ho scoperto che era arrivata una nave da crociera. È stata una sorpresa trovare una nave così grande attraccata lì, ma penso che questo debba essere il posto più vicino a Glasgow dove si può prendere una grande nave e spostarsi in autobus in città. Tuttavia, alcuni passeggeri avevano deciso di rimanere a Greenock. Si capiva che erano passeggeri della nave perché indossavano tutti gli stessi camici di plastica dati loro dalla nave. Si scopre che c’è un piccolo museo dei vigil del fuoco nel centro che normalmente è chiuso quasi tutti i giorni, ma quando arriva una nave da crociera il museo apre. Il personale del museo era composto di vigili in pensione e ci siamo divertiti tutti, a chiacchierare con loro. È stata una bella visita.
When I am in Greenock and in many other places in Scotland, it reminds me a little of being in Italy, in an old Renaissance town. First of all, both types are built of stone and Scottish towns look old, even though they only date back to the 1800s. All the towns in both countries are built with pride, built to show off the achievements of the citizens and to underline the greatness of the place. They are both the products of boom times, but built with dignity and seriousness, and a sense that the towns and their boom times would last forever.
Quando sono a Greenock ed in molti altri posti in Scozia, mi ricorda un po’ di essere in Italia, in una vecchia città rinascimentale. Prima di tutto, entrambe tipi sono costruite in pietra e le città scozzesi sembrano vecchie anche se risalgono solo all ottocento. Tutte queste città, in entrambi i paesi, sono costruite con orgoglio, costruite per mostrare i successi dei cittadini e per sottolineare la grandezza del posto. Sono entrambe il prodotto di tempi di boom, ma costruite con dignità e serietà, e un senso che le città e i loro tempi di boom avrebbero durati per sempre.
The place where I saw the taxi and the advert for Tonino’s pizzeria was the car park at Wemyss Bay Station. There is a bar in the station and it is a quintessentially Scottish place, somewhere I first discovered through a Johnny Hoover video. When I first went to the station on my way to the Isle of Bute, I didn’t go in because of the hurry to get on the ferry. After watching the video, I now go in every time I’m in the area. The inside is small and cosy, with a fireplace and a coal fire. It’s one of my favourite places in Scotland.
Il posto dove ho visto il taxi e la pubblicità per la pizzeria da Tonino era il parcheggio della stazione di Wemyss Bay. C’è un bar presso la stazione ed è un locale tipicamente scozzese, qualche posto che ho scoperto per la prima volta tramite un video di Johnny Hoover. Quando sono andato alla stazione per la prima volta, diretto all’Isola di Bute, non ci sono entrato per la fretta di salire sul traghetto. Dopo aver visto il video, ora non manco mai di farci un salto quando mi trovo nei paraggi,e piccolo ma accogliente, con un caminetto e un fuoco di carbone. È uno dei miei posti preferiti in Scozia.
