What is Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome?
- A skin infection that causes peeling over the body. It looks like a huge burn
- Treatment: admit, emollients, IV flucloxacillin, supportive therapy
- Recovery withing 5-7 days
What is eryipelas?
- A skin infections of the dermis layer but can go deeper into the fat
- Cause: group A strep or staph aureus in diabetes
What is the difference between cellulitis and erysipelas?
Erysipelas: acute infection of dermis
Cellulitis: acute infection of deep dermis and subcutaneous fat
What in tinea pedis?
AKA athletes foot
superficial: dermatophytes (tinea or ringworm) or yeasts
Deep: chromomycosis or sporotrichosis
What is tinea cruris?
Infection involving the genital, pubic, perineal, and perianal skin
Causes: dermatophytes
What are dermatophytes?
A pathogenic fungus that grows on skin, mucous membranes, hair, nails, feathers, and other body surfaces, causing ringworm and related diseases
Eg. Tinea barbae, tinea capitis, tinea croporis
What is the treatment for dermatophyte infections?
- Topical antifungal Eg. miconazole nitrate
- Systemic antifungal Eg. terbinafine, itraconazole
- Tinea capitis treated with oral antifungals and ketoconazole shampoo
- Tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton tonsurans (highly infectious) screen family member
How are scabies treated?
Permethrin cream or malathion
Everything that has been in contact needs to be washed a high temperature or frozen for a couple days
