What is fragile X syndrome?
A genetic condition that causes a range of developmental problems including learning disabilities and cognitive impairment
Caused by changes in gene called Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) which makes a protein called FMRP that is needed for brain development
What is congenital rubella?
Results from maternal infection of rubella during pregnancy
Can cause blindness, sensorineural deafness, heart defects, learning difficulties, microcephaly, poor growth
What is Foetal alcohol syndrome?
When the baby is exposed to alcohol during pregnancy
Causes dysmorphic feature: saddle nose, absent filtrum, thin upper lip
as well as: Autism, ADHD, Developmental/learning difficulties, Poor memory, Cognitive deficits
What is bronchialitis?
Most commonly caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
Causes narrowing of the lower respiratory tract due to inflammation of the bronchioles and build-up of mucus
What is the APGAR score?
Used in paediatrics to score a babies health
Appearance (skin colour)
Pulse (heart rate)
Grimace response (reflexes)
Activity (muscle tone)
Respiration (breathing rate and effort)
What are talipes?
Club foot
When the foot is twisted or out of position
What is Sandifer syndrome?
A movement disorder that causes muscle spasms and causes an increased risk of epilepsy
What are paroxysmal non-epileptic events?
Non-epileptic events that may mimic epileptic seizures but are not associated with rhythmic discharges of cortical neurons typical of seizures
