What is the definition of neglect?
Persistent failure to meet a child’s needs impairing health/development
Eg. lack of food, inadequate food
What is the definition of emotional abuse?
Persistent emotional maltreatment adversely affecting child’s emotional development
Eg. lack of warmth (rejection), excessive criticism, threats, bullying, overprotection
What are the risk factors for child maltreatment?
Domestic violence
Drugs and alcohol
Mental health problems
What are the long term consequences of abuse?
Behaviour problems
Poor social skills
Attentional difficulty
Educational failure
Social isolation
Homelessness
Self-harming
Criminality
When is bruising suggestive of physical abuse?
- Bruising not on bony prominences
- Infants not independently mobile
- Multiple bruises in clusters
- Bruises that carry an imprint
- Bruises with petechiae around
