Which contraceptive method is unacceptable if you want to get pregnant within the next year?
The injection
All other forms stop working as soon as you stop taking them, the injection can take 2-15months to clear and for ovulation to resume
When is the COCP contraindicated?
(Anything that increases risk of clots)
- Migraine with aura
- Atrial fibrillation
- Breast cancer
- Impaired cardiac function
Contains lactose
Risk with BMI >35, multiple risk factors for heart disease, organ transplant, undiagnosed breast mass, genetic predisposition for breast cancer
What are the contraindications for Progesterone only pill?
- Breast cancer
Contains lactose
Risks with diseases that increase risk of clots, but not contraindicated
What are the contraindications for the contraceptive injection?
- Breast cancer
Don’t give if trying to get pregnant soon
What are the contraindications the implant contraception?
- Breast cancer
What are the contraindications with using the intra-uterine non-hormonal contraceptive?
- Cervical cancer
- Elevated hCG levels
- Chlamydial/ gonorrhoea infection
- Low CD4 count (intreated HIV)
What are the drug interactions with hormonal contraceptives?
(liver enzyme inducing drugs)
- Lamotrigine
- Topiramate
- Phenytoin
- Carbamazepine
- Rifampicin
What are the different forms of emergency contraception?
- IUD: prevents fertilisation and implantation (up to 120hours after unprotected sex)
- Ulipristal Acetate: delays ovulation (up to 120 hours after)
- Levonorgestrel: delays ovulation (up to 72 hours after)
