Component 1 (the Structure Of The Respiratory System): Soc 17 Flashcards
1
Q
Why do we need our respiratory system?
A
- to get oxygen into the body
- to remove carbon dioxide from the body
- In sport or physical activity, the respiratory and cardiovascular systems must work closely together to keep the body supplied with oxygen
2
Q
What is vital capacity?
A
- greatest amount of air that can be pass into and out of the lungs by the most forceful inspiration and expiration
3
Q
What is the tidal volume?
A
- is the amount of air inspired and expired with each breath
4
Q
How does it work? (Respiratory system)
A
- When breathing in (inhaling), the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs) contract and lift the chest upwards and outwards while the diaphragm tightens and lowers
- The diaphragm changes from a dome shape to a flatter shape when we breathe in.
5
Q
What happens once inhaled?
A
- chest volume increases as air is sucked into the lungs
- the intercoastal muscle contract to expand the rib cage
- the diaphragm contract and moves down
6
Q
What is Gaseous exchange?
A
- Takes place in the alveoli, where oxygen diffuses from the air to the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood to the air
7
Q
What is oxygen debt?
A
- the amount of oxygen that is needed for an athlete to consume at the end of a physical activity to break down lactic acid
8
Q
What is VO2 max?
A
How much volume of oxygen an athlete can consume while exercising at maximum capacity
