Component 1 (Levers): Sock 20 Flashcards
What is the term ‘lever’
Refers to a system of muscles and bones working together to bring a movemtn
How does a lever work?
Lever has four components -
1) fulcrum - the point around which the lever rotates
2) load - the force that is applied by the lever system. The load is the object you want to move a dumbell with your arm
3) effort - a force that is applied by the user of the lever system supplied by your muscle
4) lever arm - rigid bar such as a bone
What are the three different classes of levers?
- First class
- Second class
- Third class
What is the first class?
The fulcrum sits in the middle between the load and the effort
An example of a first class lever?
Tricep dip - elbow is the fulcrum which sits between the load the weight held in the hand and the effort applied by the tricep
What is the second class?
The load sits between the fulcrum and effort
An example of a second class
A calf raiser - the body weight (load) sits between the toes ans the ball of the feet (fulcrum) and the gastrocnemius muscles apply the effort by pulling the heel
What is the third class?
The effort is applied betweenthe fulcrum and the load
An example of a third class?
Bicep curl - the effort is applied by the bicep muscle which is between the fulcrum at the elbow joint and the eight in your hands
What is the term ‘mechanical advantage’?
When the output of the lever is greater than the output when the load is greater than the effort so you are getting more out than you are putting in - first and second class lever both work mechanical advantage
What is the term ‘mechanical disadvantage’?
Happens when the effort and the load are both the same of the fulcrum but the effort sits closer to the fulcrum than the load meaning the force you apply is greater than the load putting in more than out - third class is a mechanical disadvantage
