Chemistry: Chapter 11 Flashcards
define skeleton equation
a chemical equation that doesn’t indicate the relative amounts of the reactants and products
define chemical equation
a representation of a chemical reaction
define catalyst
a substance that speeds up the reaction but is not used up in the reaction
what does + indicate?
it separates two reactants or two products
what does —> mean?
“yields”, separates reactants from products
what do the double half arrowed signs mean?
it’s used in place of the –> sign for reversible reactions
define aqueous
where the substance is dissolved in water
describe the sign that is used to indicate that heat is supplied in the reaction
the arrow with “heat” on top of it, or a small triangle
describe the sign that indicates a catalyst is present
an arrow with the formula on top / bottom of the arrow
define coefficients
small whole numbers that are placed in front of the formulas in an equation in order to balance it
define balanced equation
where each side of an equation has the same number of atoms of each element and mass is conserved
what does the law of conservation of mass state?
mass is conserved through a chemical or physical change
define a combination reaction
a chemical change in which two or more substances react to form a single new substance
ex. A + B –> AB
define a decomposition reaction
a chemical change in which a single compound breaks down into two or more simpler products
ex. AB –> A + B
define single-replacement reaction
a chemical change in which one element replaces a second element in a compound
ex. AB + CD –> AC + BD
